When the government cuts back on budgeting for the schools, often the first programs to be cut are those involving the arts. Children who receive a music education score higher on math tests, particularly fractions, are better readers, and develop cognitive skills which help them get accepted into medical schools. Cognitive skills help in analyzing complex data such as financial concepts, law documents, and medial findings.
Children who learn to play musical instruments are better disciplined, have more self-confidence, learn how to work hard, and to follow things through. Whenever I have taught piano , usually to elementary school children, I noticed that they were very determined to learn the songs and would play them over and over again until they mastered them. When we held a recital, the children were very proud of what they had accomplished.
I witnessed one of my students go through what seemed to me to be a "personality change." When she began the lessons, she was difficult. Her behavior was out of control and she argued frequently with the other children. After about two months of lessons, she had changed into a joyful child who had a passion for playing the piano. I was amazed when she stopped hanging out with her friends who were known for being "tough" in favor of playing the piano. She spent more time on it than anyone else!
I feel that music and the arts should not be eliminated from the curriculum as many students would benefit from the programs. We would have a society of better disciplined children who would be better prepared to enter college and do well.
